Good Afternoon,
This letter is to provide you with accurate information, discourage rumors, and ask for your assistance in speaking with your child. Earlier today, law enforcement contacted the district regarding a post to the Internet by a student during the overnight hours.
Specifically, the social media post suggested violence against schools and residential homes related to the outcome of the presidential election. The threat has been investigated. Law enforcement has determined there is no credible or specific threat to any school within our regional school district. Additionally, law enforcement has identified the student who made the post. As always, the district is working closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of our schools.
Recent events at schools in other states have heightened everyone’s concern for the safety of students. I want to assure you that we take any type of threat seriously and have the full cooperation of law enforcement. This policy will not change.
I encourage you to talk with your child about the seriousness of threats and the importance of reporting suspicious activities, threats, or disturbing information to a trusted adult. Students also need to be aware that law enforcement agencies are taking these threats very seriously and are pursuing prosecution even when such incidents are intended as pranks.
Please make sure your child is aware of these ramifications and that he or she understands hoaxes related to campus safety will not be tolerated.
I appreciate your continued support of a safe learning environment for our staff and students within the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District. It is a team effort for every one of us, and your partnership and support is essential. As always, I thank you for your continued partnership and support of the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District.
Sincerely Yours,
Paul S. Haughey, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District
